The Body Shop Teams Up with Somaly Mam to Fight Child Prostitution

Jul 29th, 2009 | By Seventeen.com Article Feed | Category: From Your Favorite Magazines

Somaly Mam, a former victim of the child sex trafficking
industry in Cambodia, is a vocal activist in the fight against it. Her
organization, AFESIP, has helped rescue and rehabilitate thousands of women and
children in Southeast Asia. Internationally, the global child sex industry
receives very little attention, so she has teamed up with The Body Shop and
ECPAT (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and Trafficking of Children
for Sexual Purposes) to raise awareness. Over 1.2 million children and young
people are exploited in the global sex trade each year, and some estimate that
the figure may be as high as 4 million. Thanks to its late founder, Dame Anita
Roddick, The Body Shop has been involved with this issue since 2007 and hopes
to inspire real change in an issue too often deemed too uncomfortable to discuss. Starting
in August, The Body Shop will launch Stop Sex Trafficking of Young People and
Children with Soft Hands, Kind Heart Hand Cream, and will donate $6.00 of every
$10 of proceeds to ECPAT. They will also launch Bags for Life totes and
Create Your Own gift bags to raise funds for the Somaly Mam Foundation.
