Mariah, 18, is from Virginia and just beginning her sophomore year of college. She has dealt with acne in some form since she was 13, but had never seen a doctor about it — she just kept trying different products from the drugstore and hoping it would one day go away.

A study conducted by the company that makes the acne treatment Retin-A found that almost 100% of teens have had some type of breakout. It makes sense, since acne affects 40-50 million people in the United States! So, the biggest thing to remember if you're frustrated over your breakouts is that you're definitely not alone.

Since Mariah had never seen a dermatologist before, we set her up with Dr. Linda Franks, who runs a practice called Gramercy Park Dermatology in New York City. Dr. Franks explained that Mariah has comedonal and inflammatory acne, which means she has a mix of blackheads and fully formed pimples, called papules. Because her skin cells weren't shedding properly, Mariah's pores were getting clogged with a mix of dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria, causing her breakouts.
